Scottie Dog Card w/ Chain Stitched Leash:

To make this card you will need a blank red greeting card, blue, green, yellow and black card stock, red ribbon, a sewing needle, and red embroidery thread. A piercing tool(a thumbtack, the kind you can grip, also works) and foam pad or the opposite side of a mouse pad are also helpful to have. Scissors, tape, glue, and other craft essentials also required.
We will be mounting this design onto a blank 6.5 X 5 inch red greeting card. You can fold your own from a 6.5 X 10 inch peice of card stock. Set that to the side.
Start with a piece of 4.5 X 6 inch blue card stock for the background. From a 6 inch wide peice of green card stock, cut a random line for the grass that is about 1.25 inches wide. From the corner of a scrap piece of yellow card stock, cut out a rounded shape. Glue these to the front of your card. You can also go ahead and cut out the dog shape from black card stock but do not glue him down yet, set him aside with the blank red card for now. The lines in the template on the dog's neck show where to make cuts in the blue background to string the ribbon, we'll get back to this. The green and yellow leftover scraps can go back into your stash, we're done with them.

Next, we'll be poking holes in the blue background using the template provided. Place the template in the top right hand corner of the card. Now place a foam pad or opposite side of a mouse pad behind your work and using a piercing tool or thumb tack, poke holes in the blue card stock where the dots indicate. Note that the dog's collar will start where the last dot ends, so if you want a different placement for your dog, move the stitching template around and/or end with a different dot. Do not glue the dog down yet, just poke holes in the blue card stock using the template provided.

Also cut 2 slits in the blue card stock, as shown below. The slits should be located behind where the dog's neck will be on the card. The dog cut-out will hide these slits so it doesn't matter if they aren't perfect.

Next we are going to chain stitch the dog's leash. We used 6 strand DMC embroidery thread separated to 3 strands. If you will be using thicker ribbon, you may want to use all 6 strands for the sewing. Thread the needle and tape the end to the back of your card. Push the needle through the hole closest to where the dog's collar will be.

Now, turn the card over and push the threaded needle back through the same hole, but don't pull the thread all the way through otherwise you'll just undo your stitch.

Leave a loop of thread on the front of the card instead of pulling the thread all the way through. Then, on the back of the card, push the needle into the second hole. Turn the card over and go through the loop of thread with your needle. Pull it somewhat tight, not too tight, and you'll have the first link in the chain.

Keep repeating the previous steps. On the front of the card, push the needle back through the second hole, but leave a loop on the front of the card. On the back of the card, push the needle through the third hole, turn it over and catch the loop of thread, then pull it somewhat tight.

Now just work your way across the card. If you run out out thread, you can make a "knot" by pushing the needle through the same hole but on the other side of the thread so you "catch" it. Tape the loose end down on the back of your card then start again with a new piece of thread. Tape the new peice down on the back of your card then push the needle through the same hole where you left off and keep going.

Continue right off the edge of the card to make the last loop. Pull the remaining thread around to the back of your card and tape it in place. Trim the excess thread.

String a piece of ribbon through the 2 slits you previously made in the card.

Now you can glue the dog into position.

Tie his bow, glue this to the blank red greeting card, and you should have a card that looks something like this:
