Start with a piece of purple card stock that is 10" X 14" and fold it in half or use a pre-folded 5" X 7" blank greeting card. Now cut out a piece of cream card stock that is 4.5" X 6.5". You will be embroidering on the cream stock then mounting it to the front of the blank greeting card.

In addition to card stock you will also need green, purple, and orange thread (or colors of your choice), a sewing needle, a pricking tool or thumb tack, tape, a glue stick, and a mat to place under your work when you poke the holes. For the thread, we used DMC embroidery thread and separated it, working with only one strand at a time.

First print the pattern and center it on the front of your cream card stock. Next you will be poking holes in your piece of card stock where indicated on the pattern. You will need a mat or other soft surface like the wrong side of a computer mouse pad to place beneath the card stock and pattern when poking the holes. You can use a fine pricking tool to poke the holes but a thumb tack, the kind that you can grip, also works if that's all you have. Just note that a thumb tack leaves large holes so may be more suitable when working with thicker thread. After all the holes have been poked in your card stock, set the pattern aside.

Now you will begin stitching the card. Let's start by stitching the letters. If you want different wording, www.stitchingcards.com has a free font that can be downloaded. They also have free sample stitching patterns available and patterns available for purchase. Looking at the back, push the needle through hole #1 and tape the end down so it will not pull all the way through. Now go in at 2, out at 3, then in at 4 to make the first letter. Now come out at 5, in at 6, out at 7, in at 8, out at 9, and in at 10. You have now formed the TH. Continue working out the other letters using the holes as a guide. The exact order you go doesn't really matter as long as they look like the letters they represent when you are finished. One great thing about stitching cards is that it's so easy to undo any mistake, just pull the thread back through. When you run out of thread while stitching, just tape down the old piece on the back of your card and then tape down a new one. Don't press down too much when applying the tape (but make sure it is stable) or an impression of the thread might show on the front of your card.

Now let's back stitch the stem. Again, looking at the back, push the needle through hole #1 and tape the end down so it will not pull all the way through. Now turn it over to the front and continue sewing as follows: In at 2, out at 3, in at 2, out at 4, in at 3, out at 5, in at 4, out at 6, in at 5, out at 7, in at 6, out at 8, in at 7, out at 9, in at 8, out at 10, in at 9, out at 11, in at 10, out at 12, in at 11.

Both leaves are worked out the same way although the patterns are slightly different. In this illustration, the numbers are to the left of the dot they represent. To make the center of the leaves, looking at the front of your card, bring the thread out at #1. Now go in at 2, back out through 1 again, then in through 3. Continue sewing as follows: Come out at 4, in at 5, back out at 4, and in at 6. Come out at 7, in at 8, back out at 7, and in at 9. Come out at 10, in at 11, back out at 10, and in at 12. Come out at 13, in at 14, back out at 13, and in at 15. Come out at 16, in at 17, back out at 16, and in at 18. Now back stitch along the center seam starting with the outer most green points that are not numbered. Next you can back stitch around the edges(the green dots). Use the instructions included with Illustration A above if you do not know how to back stitch. When following the back stitch numbered guidelines, ignore the numbers in the current diagram, instead count the first dot as #1, the second dot as #2 and so on. It doesn't matter if they go around a corner, continue stitching the same way.

The flower has six petals and they are all done the same way. Don't worry, this is the last main step. You can back stitch around the edges after this step or you can leave them borderless if you prefer. The numbers in this illustration are also to the left of the dot they represent. Come out through 1, tape down the thread on the back, go in through 2(looking at the front of the card). Now continue stitching as follows: come out through 3, go in through 4, come out through 5, go in through 6, come out through 7, go in through 8, come out through 9, go in through 10, come out through 11, go in through 12, come out through 13, go in through 14, now tape down your piece on the back.

After this, just back stitch around the center of the flower with orange thread, mount it to your card and you are finished.
